In a landmark moment for both agriculture and food technology, Dutch startup RespectFarms has officially inaugurated the world’s first cultivated meat production facility integrated into a working dairy farm. Located in Schipluiden, South Holland, the site represents a significant shift in how the industry approaches cellular agriculture—moving away from massive, centralized biotech factories toward a decentralized, farm-based model.
A New Model for Farmer-Led Innovation
The facility, housed on the dairy farm of Corné van Leeuwen, was launched to demonstrate that cultivated meat can coexist with, and even complement, traditional livestock farming. By installing specialized production units directly within existing agricultural infrastructure, RespectFarms aims to provide farmers with a new business model that diversifies their income and keeps them at the heart of the food system.
“We’re building a model where farmers remain at the center of food production, not replaced by factories,” says Ira van Eelen, co-founder of RespectFarms. “This project is about exploring how farmers can participate in and help shape the future of cultivated meat”.
Breaking Down the Barriers
The project, which received a €2 million grant from the CRAFT (Cellular Revolution in Agriculture and Farming Technology) Consortium and the EU-backed EIT Food accelerator, addresses several key challenges currently facing the cultivated meat industry:
- Farmer Integration: By involving farmers early in the development process, the project seeks to mitigate the fear that cellular agriculture poses an existential threat to traditional livestock producers.
- Decentralization: Instead of relying solely on large-scale industrial bioreactors, this “scale-out” approach tests whether smaller, farm-scale units can offer a more resilient and locally rooted production framework.
- Transparency and Trust: The farm features an Experience Centre, a dedicated space for policymakers, students, consumers, and fellow farmers to observe the technology firsthand. By demystifying the production process, RespectFarms hopes to foster greater consumer acceptance.
Looking Ahead
The inauguration marks the transition from installation to active operation. As Van Leeuwen, the first farmer in the world to receive EIP-Agri funding for cultivated meat research, notes: “As a farmer, you have to look ahead… This is a chance to see whether a new income model can fit alongside what we already do”.
While the industry faces significant hurdles—including manufacturing costs, regulatory approval, and consumer perception—the RespectFarms model offers a glimpse into a potential future where high-tech protein production is a rural, rather than exclusively urban, endeavor.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Is cultivated meat intended to replace traditional livestock farming? A: According to the developers and industry experts, the goal is coexistence, not replacement. The project positions cultivated meat as a complementary business model that allows farmers to diversify their income streams while leveraging their existing expertise.
Q: Why is this project significant for farmers? A: It is the first project to integrate cultivated meat production directly into a working farm and the first to receive EU agricultural innovation funding (EIP-Agri) for this purpose. It empowers farmers to participate in the “protein transition” rather than being marginalized by large-scale biotech companies.
Q: Can I visit the site? A: Yes. The site includes an Experience Centre designed to engage with citizens, students, and stakeholders to facilitate open discussion about the future of food.
Q: What is the CRAFT Consortium? A: CRAFT (Cellular Revolution in Agriculture and Farming Technology) is a European consortium including Wageningen University & Research, Mosa Meat, Aleph Farms, and others, focused on commercializing farm-scale cultivated meat production.
