Evaluation Process for Barley Varieties
As part of the ongoing research and development in the barley sector, several varieties are currently undergoing Stage Two Evaluation. This stage is critical for assessing the performance and suitability of these varieties in various growing conditions.
Varieties Undergoing Stage Two Evaluation
Among the notable varieties in this phase are:
- Titan AX: Unfortunately, the amount of grain available was insufficient to complete a comprehensive evaluation in 2024. As a result, it will continue its Stage Two evaluation this year.
- AGTB0318: Similar to Titan AX, this variety also faced challenges due to inadequate grain availability, necessitating its continuation in Stage Two evaluation for this year.
- Laperouse: This variety had an adequate grain supply for evaluation; however, the Stage Two assessment is still pending due to unavoidable delays that have impacted the process.
Stakeholders in the barley industry can expect an update regarding these varieties in the upcoming months, as further information is anticipated to be released. This will provide insights into the progress of the evaluations and any potential implications for growers and the market.
Successful Transition to Stage Two
In a positive development, the variety Spinnaker successfully completed its Stage One evaluation in December. This achievement allows it to progress into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials, which are scheduled for 2025. Such advancements are crucial for the ongoing improvement and diversification of barley varieties available to producers.
New Varieties Accepted into the Accreditation Program
In addition to those undergoing evaluation, several new varieties have been accepted into the accreditation program, showcasing the continuous efforts to enhance barley cultivation. The varieties include:
- RGT Atlantis: Submitted by RAGT, this variety is derived from RGT Planet and is designed to be waterlogging-tolerant. It is particularly suited for cultivation in regions that experience high rainfall and has been bred to endure periods of waterlogging effectively.
- AGTB0530: This herbicide-tolerant variety, submitted by AGT, shows broad adaptability but is ideally suited for regions with low to medium rainfall.
- IGB22023T: Submitted by InterGrain, this imidazolinone-tolerant barley is well-suited for low-rainfall regions, making it a valuable option for arid environments.
- IGB22117T: Also submitted by InterGrain, this imidazolinone-tolerant variety is designed for higher-rainfall environments, providing growers with more choices depending on their local conditions.
Pending final quality checks, there is sufficient grain available for all varieties accepted into the accreditation program, and they are set to commence Stage One evaluation this year. This is an encouraging sign for the future of barley cultivation, as it reflects ongoing innovation and adaptation to various agricultural challenges.
Withdrawals from the Accreditation Program
It is also important to note that two varieties have been withdrawn from the accreditation program: AGT’s Yeti and Beast. The decision to withdraw these varieties underscores the rigorous standards maintained within the accreditation process, ensuring that only the most promising and viable options are pursued.
As the barley industry continues to evolve and adapt, the results of these evaluations and the introduction of new varieties will play a significant role in shaping the future of barley production. Stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed about ongoing developments and updates that will emerge from these evaluations.
