Taiwanese company Dong Fang Offshore (DFO), owned and operated by Hung Hua Construction, has once again partnered with Vard, a Norwegian shipbuilder under the Fincantieri umbrella, to commission a new subsea construction vessel. With a robust fleet of over 15 offshore vessels, DFO has committed to investing €113.5 million ($126 million) for the construction and delivery of the vessel, scheduled for the second quarter of 2027. In addition to this initial order, DFO has also secured options for potential future newbuilds, demonstrating their confidence in Vard’s capabilities and the demand for specialized vessels in the offshore industry.

Designed to excel in subsea operations, offshore wind projects, and maintenance activities, the 121.3-meter-long vessel will also be equipped for cable installation and repair tasks within the offshore wind and telecommunications sectors. Key features of the vessel include a 250 metric ton active heave compensated offshore crane, a spacious 1,200 square meter work deck optimized for cable repair or installation operations, and ROV hangars designed to accommodate built-in ROVs on both sides of the ship. Moreover, the vessel will be capable of integrating a motion-compensated gangway, an under-deck carousel, a large trencher, and a helideck, ensuring versatility and efficiency in various offshore tasks.

This collaboration marks the third project between Vard and DFO, following the successful completion of two commissioning service operations vessels that were contracted last year. The construction process will involve building the vessel’s hull at Vard Shipyards Romania in Braila, while the outfitting, commissioning, and final delivery will take place at Vard Søviknes in Norway. This strategic division of labor leverages the specialized expertise and resources of each shipyard to ensure the timely and high-quality completion of the vessel, meeting the stringent standards of both parties and the industry as a whole.

The partnership between DFO and Vard underscores the growing demand for advanced and purpose-built vessels in the offshore sector, driven by the expanding scope and complexity of projects in subsea construction, offshore wind energy, and telecommunications infrastructure. By investing in cutting-edge technology and innovative design solutions, DFO aims to enhance its operational capabilities and maintain a competitive edge in the market. The decision to collaborate with Vard, a renowned player in the maritime industry with a track record of delivering high-performance vessels, reflects DFO’s commitment to excellence and its strategic vision for future growth and success.

In conclusion, the commissioning of a new subsea construction vessel by DFO in partnership with Vard represents a significant milestone in the evolution of the offshore industry. With a focus on versatility, efficiency, and reliability, the vessel is poised to meet the evolving needs of the market and support a wide range of offshore activities. As the project progresses towards completion, both DFO and Vard are poised to showcase their expertise and dedication to delivering world-class vessels that set new standards in the maritime sector.
