The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the grocery e-commerce industry, leading to significant changes in consumer behavior and shopping trends. A recent report from Brick Meets Click and Mercatus highlights the evolution of grocery e-commerce over the past five years, showcasing a shift in how consumers are utilizing online grocery services.

Prior to the pandemic, ship-to-home sales accounted for over 40% of online grocery sales, but this number has now decreased to just 18%. In contrast, delivery services have seen a significant increase, accounting for 43% of online grocery sales, up from around a quarter in 2019. March’s online grocery sales reached $9.7 billion, marking the eighth consecutive month where sales exceeded $9.5 billion.

The pandemic, which began in March 2020, led to widespread lockdowns and changes in consumer behavior that have continued to influence the online grocery landscape. The report shows that grocery e-commerce sales surged over 200% to $6.5 billion in March 2020, peaking in 2021 before stabilizing through mid-2024. Recent months have seen a 20% increase in online grocery sales, driven by a rise in subscriptions and membership promotions.

Delivery services have been the top performer, growing over 20% year over year to $4.2 billion. This growth can be attributed to an expansion of the monthly active user base and the effectiveness of promotional strategies. Pickup services reached $3.8 billion, while ship-to-home totaled $1.8 billion in March. According to David Bishop, a partner at Brick Meets Click, promotional strategies and memberships/subscriptions are essential for driving customer retention and recurring revenue.

In addition to the increase in sales, there has been a shift in how consumers prefer to receive their online grocery orders. Prior to the pandemic, 85% of monthly active users relied on just one method for receiving online orders. However, there has been a noticeable increase in households using a combination of delivery, pickup, and ship-to-home services for their grocery orders.

The data from the report underscores the lasting impact of the pandemic on the grocery e-commerce industry and the continued reliance of consumers on online shopping services. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be important for retailers to adapt to changing consumer preferences and invest in strategies that drive customer loyalty and revenue growth.

Overall, the growth of grocery e-commerce in recent years highlights the importance of innovation and adaptation in the face of evolving consumer trends. The industry’s continued expansion and the shift towards a more diverse range of online shopping services indicate a promising future for the grocery e-commerce sector.
