In a bid to enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of the pharmaceutical supply chain in Africa, Transaid has joined forces with the American International Health Alliance (AIHA) on a groundbreaking 12-month project. The initiative, funded by The Gates Foundation, focuses on Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Services (EPSS) to bolster its human resources capacity and elevate staff development.
The EPSS, based in Addis Ababa, manages the procurement of nearly one billion USD worth of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies annually. These essential supplies are distributed to over 4,000 health facilities across Ethiopia, which currently stands as the 10th most populous country in the world.

Sam Clark, Head of Programmes for Transaid, highlights the significance of this partnership by stating, “EPSS aims to become the most responsive and efficient pharmaceutical supply chain organization in Africa by 2030, and this project is a key enabler of that vision. Through a comprehensive review of EPSS policies and procedures, coupled with on-site visits and stakeholder consultations, we have identified specific areas where we can enhance current practices.”
