Kroger, the well-known supermarket chain, has recently announced its plans to invest $130 million in its Cincinnati/Dayton division in 2025. This investment will include the construction of three new supermarkets and the renovation of 16 existing stores in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Additionally, Kroger will be building four fuel centers and implementing energy and maintenance improvements with the capital injected into the division.

The decision to expand and upgrade operations in these three states comes at a time when Publix is also increasing its presence in Kentucky. It also coincides with Kroger dealing with legal issues arising from its failed attempt to merge with Albertsons.

Of the three new stores planned by Kroger, two will be situated in the cities of Edgewood and Newport, Kentucky, near the company’s headquarters in Cincinnati. The third store will be located in Eaton, Ohio, approximately 25 miles west of Dayton. These new stores will offer various amenities such as pharmacies, gas stations, off-site wine and spirits stores, pickup facilities, expanded departments, and fuel centers.

In addition to the new constructions, Kroger will be using part of the allocated capital to upgrade 16 existing stores in the region. These renovations, totaling $45 million, will include expansions at specific locations like the Kroger Mulberry store in Milford, Ohio, and the addition of a fuel center at the Derr Road Kroger location in Springfield, Ohio. The exact list of stores set for renovation has not been disclosed by Kroger.

Ann Reed, President of the Cincinnati/Dayton division, emphasized the company’s commitment to its employees, customers, and communities through this $130 million investment. This decision follows Kroger’s previous capital improvements in Ohio and Indiana, where $84 million was spent in 2024. These investments included upgrades to 15 stores, as well as the construction of a new Kroger Marketplace store in Warren County, Ohio.

While Kroger focuses on enhancing its operations, Publix has also been making strides in the region. Last month, Publix opened its first store in Northern Kentucky, with plans for four more locations in the area.

Overall, Kroger’s strategic investments in store expansions and renovations demonstrate its dedication to providing a superior shopping experience for its customers. As the company continues to navigate challenges in the industry, these developments showcase its commitment to growth and innovation in the grocery sector.
