The asparagus hectare yield in Kavala, Greece, a prominent growing region for this vegetable, is on the rise. Despite a slow start to the season due to lack of sunshine and low temperatures, recent improvements in weather conditions have led to increased production expectations. Mr. Kostas Maragozis, agronomist at Greek fresh produce exporter A.C. Nespar, anticipates a boost in production from early plants and later plantations as well to meet market demand.

Market demand for asparagus is currently high, with a particular interest in white asparagus, which is known for its productivity and popularity. However, there is a growing demand for green asparagus in markets like Germany. A.C. Nespar is adapting to these trends by considering the inclusion of green asparagus in their product portfolio.

According to Mr. Maragozis, green asparagus is preferred by gourmet restaurants for its convenience in cooking. However, the cultivation of green asparagus presents challenges due to limited workforce availability during crucial stages of production. Workers tend to prioritize jobs in other sectors, such as kiwifruit cultivation, which is also offered by the cooperative.

In addition to asparagus, A.C. Nespar also cultivates Hayward kiwifruit, which is experiencing a successful season. The cooperative expects to deplete their kiwifruit stocks by April without any concerns about storage issues. They are actively expanding their Hayward cultivation and planning to increase their cooling capacity to accommodate the growing demand.
