The Volta Group and Richel Group have recently announced the commissioning of a new photovoltaic project in the Drôme department, known as Les Vergers de Fouillas. This project, designed for kiwi production in greenhouses, is set to produce 7.3 GWh of green energy annually. The collaboration between Volta Group, an independent producer of renewable energy, and Richel Group, a European manufacturer of greenhouses and flexible-cover storage solutions, has resulted in the creation of two photovoltaic greenhouses covering 5 hectares with a total installed capacity of 5 MW.
The project, initiated in 2023, involved resizing the facilities, optimizing the greenhouse design, and overseeing their construction. The greenhouses, situated 200 meters apart, will generate green electricity equivalent to the consumption of 3,000 people for 30 years. The innovative concept behind Les Vergers de Fouillas involves providing the greenhouses to farmers free of charge in exchange for photovoltaic power over three decades.
The design of the greenhouse is specifically tailored for kiwi production, making it an ideal environment for Mr. Fereyre, a member of the Lorifruit cooperative, who produces 6,000 tons of fruit annually. By introducing yellow and red kiwi plants in the greenhouse, Mr. Fereyre aims to take advantage of the controlled environment provided by the photovoltaic structure. The greenhouse features bifacial modules on the roof to ensure sufficient light for the kiwi plants’ flowering, while tilting frames and roll-up walls allow for temperature regulation, ventilation, and humidity control. Furthermore, the greenhouse offers protection against PSA bacterial blight and hailstorms, common threats to kiwi crops in the region, while also conserving water by shielding the plants from the mistral wind.
Mr. Fereyre emphasizes the benefits of the project, stating that the greenhouse enhances crop protection, improves yields, and provides a sense of security against climatic risks. The infrastructure not only safeguards the crops but also supports sustainable agricultural practices for the future.
