In a significant move towards sustainability in the Japanese agricultural sector, dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has partnered with Zenkei Company Limited, a leading player in livestock nutrition. The two companies have formalized their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at implementing dsm-firmenich’s innovative life cycle assessment platform, Sustell™. This partnership is tailored to enhance the sustainability of both feed and egg production in Japan.

The signing ceremony represents a pivotal moment in Zenkei Company Limited’s commitment to improving its environmental performance. The integration of Sustell™ is expected to establish new benchmarks for quality and sustainability within the Japanese egg industry. This collaboration will not only enhance operational efficiencies but also pave the way for more environmentally responsible practices throughout the sector.

The partnership will enable Zenkei Company Limited to deploy dsm-firmenich’s state-of-the-art cloud-based solution, which is designed to accurately assess, optimize, and minimize the environmental impact of animal protein and feed production. A key aspect of this initiative involves the adoption of a circular economy approach, where Zenkei is focused on producing low environmental footprint feed that incorporates processed food waste. According to measurements conducted by Sustell™, this eco-friendly feed is reported to have a 30-50% lower environmental footprint when compared to traditional feed options.

This collaboration underscores the shared commitment of both organizations to establish new sustainability standards in the egg production sector, ensuring long-term environmental stewardship for the industry in Japan. The integration of innovative practices and technologies is not only a response to growing consumer demand for sustainability but also a proactive measure to address the challenges posed by climate change and resource scarcity.

Dr. Mongkol Kaewsutas, Director Precision Services Greater APAC at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, commented on the partnership, stating, “This collaboration marks a significant advancement in promoting sustainable practices across the entire egg production value chain. By utilizing the Sustell™ platform, Zenkei Company Limited can leverage precise data, which will empower them to optimize their operations, reduce environmental impacts, and contribute to Japan’s broader sustainability goals.”

Shotaro Takasugi, Director & General Manager of Zenkei Corporation, added, “To maximize the efficiency and sustainability of nutritious animal protein, we need to move beyond merely implementing effective feed additives and improving farm management practices. It is equally critical to utilize nutrients that are not suitable for human consumption, such as ‘eco-feed’ derived from processed food waste. The environmental footprint calculations provided by Sustell™ are thus an essential component of our strategic framework.”

This Memorandum of Understanding between dsm-firmenich and Zenkei Company Limited serves as a testament to the increasing commitment to responsible and sustainable food production within the agricultural sector. As the Japanese egg industry continues to evolve, this collaboration is poised to act as a benchmark for best practices in environmental stewardship and operational excellence, setting a precedent for future initiatives aimed at fostering sustainability in food production.
