Bimbo Bakeries USA, a subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, has made significant progress in 2024 in advancing its “Our purpose – nourishing a better world” program. This initiative is built on three pillars: baked for you, baked for life, and baked for nature.

Under the “baked for you” pillar, Bimbo Bakeries USA has focused on providing consumers with products that are not only delicious but also nutritious. The company has made strides in offering more diverse nutrients, including whole grains and plant-based ingredients, in simpler recipes. As part of this effort, BBU has equipped 100% of its branded products packaging with SmartLabel QR codes, allowing consumers to easily access ingredient lists, product information, recipes, and insights into BBU’s corporate social responsibility achievements. In 2024, BBU introduced nine new better-for-you products, such as Little Bites lower sugar muffins, The Rustik Oven artisan-style flatbreads, and Sara Lee half loaves.

The “baked for life” pillar of BBU’s program focuses on supporting the company’s workers and giving back to the community. In 2024, BBU donated approximately 25 million pounds of product to local food banks across the country, helping to combat food insecurity. The company is also committed to promoting diversity, equity, and belonging within its workforce and the communities it serves. BBU supports non-profit organizations that work to advance economic opportunities, education, and health in underserved areas. Additionally, BBU implemented a volunteer time-off policy in late 2023, resulting in employees contributing over 300 hours of volunteer time.

“Baked for nature” is the third pillar of Bimbo Bakeries USA’s program, which focuses on environmental sustainability. The company is dedicated to becoming a zero-carbon company and has taken significant steps towards this goal in 2024. BBU partnered with GreenStruxure to launch on-site microgrid systems at six of its California bakeries, including locations in Montebello, Placentia, and San Francisco. These solar-powered systems, coupled with battery storage, provide nearly 20% of the bakeries’ energy needs and help to reduce BBU’s carbon footprint by an estimated 1,700 carbon dioxide equivalent tonnes annually. Furthermore, BBU expanded its fleet of electric vehicles in 2024 and was recognized with the 2024 Energy Star Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency for its commitment to energy efficiency.

In summary, Bimbo Bakeries USA’s “Our purpose – nourishing a better world” program has made significant strides in 2024 across its three pillars: baked for you, baked for life, and baked for nature. The company’s focus on providing nutritious products, supporting its workforce and communities, and promoting environmental sustainability demonstrates its commitment to making a positive impact on society and the planet. Through these efforts, BBU continues to lead the way in the baking industry and sets an example for other companies to follow.
