In response to President Trump’s announcement of a 10% tariff on all imports, Cathy Burns, CEO of the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA), expressed concerns about potential supply chain disruptions and the impact of retaliatory tariffs on food prices. The IFPA is deeply committed to ensuring the stability and accessibility of fresh produce globally, as it is essential for the health and well-being of people worldwide.

Burns highlighted the potential risks associated with tariffs, stating that they have the potential to disrupt supply chains, destabilize markets, and lead to increased food prices globally. She emphasized that the global trade of fresh produce plays a crucial role in ensuring food security and economic stability, and tariffs could significantly impact the competitive edge of suppliers in the industry.

In a fact sheet issued by the White House, it was clarified that goods compliant under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), including specialty crops, would not be subjected to additional tariffs. While Burns appreciated the exemption of fresh produce and floral products covered under the USMCA from tariffs, she expressed concerns about the broader application of tariffs on global trading partners.

The IFPA believes that providing exemptions for fresh produce and florals, in addition to regulatory reform and ensuring a secure agricultural workforce, is vital to supporting American growers, businesses, and consumers. Burns emphasized the importance of working with the administration to develop balanced solutions that protect American agriculture while ensuring access to affordable, nutritious food for all.

The 10% baseline tariff is set to take effect on April 5, with an additional, individualized tariff on approximately 60 countries scheduled to take effect on April 9. The IFPA remains committed to advocating for policies that support the interests of the fresh produce industry and promote global food security.
