The North American robotics market exhibited modest growth in 2024, showcasing resilience and adaptability as automation solidified its position across diverse industries. Recent data from the Association for Advancing Automation (A3) reveals that North American companies placed orders for 31,311 robots, totaling $1.963 billion in value. This represents slight increases of 0.5% in units and 0.1% in revenue compared to 2023, indicating a stabilization phase following years marked by volatility and unprecedented growth.

Non-Automotive Industries Experience Surge

One of the most significant trends observed in 2024 was the remarkable growth within non-automotive sectors, which captured a larger share of the robotics market. Notably, the food and consumer goods sector emerged as the fastest-growing area, with robot orders skyrocketing by an impressive 65%. This surge underscores the sector’s increasing reliance on automation to meet evolving consumer expectations, optimize supply chains, and effectively address labor shortages.

Additionally, the life sciences, pharmaceutical, and biomedical industries reported substantial growth, with a remarkable 46% increase in robot orders. These advancements highlight the essential role of automation in driving innovation in healthcare and enhancing operational efficiencies within these critical sectors.

Strong Year-End Performance

The fourth quarter of 2024 concluded on a high note, with North American companies ordering 8,277 robots valued at $506 million. This reflects an 8% growth in both units and revenue when compared to the fourth quarter of 2023. The food and consumer goods sector took the lead during this quarter, achieving a staggering 77% year-over-year growth, fueled by seasonal demand and ongoing investments in automation.

Challenges in the Sector

Despite the robust growth in several areas, challenges persisted within specific sectors. Semiconductor and electronics orders experienced a significant decline of 37% annually, highlighting ongoing supply chain pressures and a cooling demand. Additionally, the metals and automotive components sectors faced declines of 4% and 15%, respectively, indicating the need for continued adaptation in these industries.

Positive Outlook for Robotics

According to Alex Shikany, executive vice president at A3, “In 2024, the North American robotics market showcased mixed results following a challenging 2023. While sectors such as automotive components are still navigating their recovery, we have observed encouraging signs of resilience across various industries. As we look ahead to 2025, the mood among our members remains optimistic, reflecting a strong belief in the enduring value of robotics and automation technologies. These innovations are vital for enhancing efficiency and maintaining competitiveness on a global scale.”
