Cranswick, a leading pig and poultry producer based in Hull, has recently made a significant acquisition in the UK pig sector by purchasing JSR Genetics from JSR Farms. This acquisition includes the entire issued share capital of JSR Genetics, including its pig genetics and pig farming operations. JSR Genetics is a prominent player in the UK pig genetics industry, serving as the exclusive distributor for Topigs Norsvin genetics in the UK and boasting a substantial number of high health nucleus and multiplication sows.

The acquisition of JSR Genetics aligns with Cranswick’s strategic goal of driving growth and securing a consistent supply for its customers’ pork requirements. By integrating a pig genetics supply chain, Cranswick aims to enhance production efficiency, meat quality, animal health, and robustness, ultimately benefiting both customers and the UK consumer. Despite the change in ownership, Cranswick has emphasized that there are no immediate plans to alter the operation of the JSR business, ensuring continuity for existing customers.

Adam Couch, the CEO of Cranswick, expressed his excitement about the acquisition, highlighting the potential for growth in the genetics business. He emphasized that Cranswick’s focus will be on investing in and expanding the genetic solutions offered by JSR Genetics, known for its innovative and sustainable approaches to pig production. The acquisition includes the transfer of staff and facilities, with JSR Genetics continuing to operate as a separate entity under Cranswick’s ownership.

Cranswick’s entry into pig genetics marks a strategic move for the company, complementing its existing pig herd and processing capabilities. With a significant investment in pork processing facilities underway, Cranswick aims to further enhance efficiency and capacity in its operations. Mr. Couch emphasized that JSR was a perfect fit for Cranswick, citing the close geographical proximity and the shared commitment to quality and innovation in pig genetics.

JSR Genetics’ focus on improving pork eating quality through collaborations with partners like Dingley Dell Farm aligns with Cranswick’s dedication to providing high-quality pork products to the British consumer. The acquisition reaffirms Cranswick’s commitment to growing British pig production and reducing reliance on imported products, contributing to a more sustainable and secure supply chain for British pork.

Founded in East Yorkshire in 1982, JSR Genetics has a long history of genetic improvement centered on sustainability, efficiency, and balanced breeding. The company’s partnership with Topigs Norsvin in 2015 further strengthened its position in the global pig genetics market. JSR Farms, the arable business associated with JSR Genetics, will continue to operate independently under the leadership of Tim Rymer, maintaining the legacy of the Rymer family’s involvement in the business.

In its third quarter trading statement, Cranswick reported strong revenue growth driven by volume growth in its core UK food business. The company’s expanded pig farming and milling operations have contributed positively to its financial performance. Additionally, the reinstatement of the China export license for its Norfolk processing facility opens up new opportunities for Cranswick in international markets. The outlook for the current financial year remains positive, in line with expectations.

Overall, Cranswick’s acquisition of JSR Genetics represents a strategic investment in the future of British pig production and genetic innovation. By combining their strengths and expertise, Cranswick and JSR Genetics aim to drive growth, improve product quality, and enhance sustainability in the UK pig sector.
