The Missouri Pork Association, in partnership with the National Pork Board and the University of Missouri, recently hosted the fourth annual FFA Swine Facility Management Contest in Columbia, Missouri. This hands-on event brought together 18 teams to compete in various real-world tasks related to the pork industry. The top five teams and top four individuals will be recognized at the 2025 Missouri FFA Convention in Columbia next Spring.
The first-place team in this year’s contest was from the North Shelby FFA Chapter, with members Sam Schwanke, Jared Johnston, Isaac Berry, and Grady Gander. Following closely behind in second place was the California FFA, represented by Owen Pringer, Isaac Haile, Jose Martinez, and Cody Schneider. The third-place spot was secured by the Pilot Grove FFA Chapter, with team members Harlei Kammerich, Katie Fenical, Arleigh Watring, and Britta Hoff. Rounding out the top four were the Bowling Green FFA Team in fourth place and the Macon FFA Chapter in fifth place.
Individual achievements were also recognized, with Jared Johnston from the North Shelby FFA claiming first place, followed by Owen Pringer from the California FFA in second place. Sam Schwanke from the North Shelby FFA placed third, and Isaac Haile from the California FFA took fourth place.
The FFA Swine Facility Management Contest tested participants on various aspects of swine production, including feed, water, air, facility management, and recordkeeping. Emphasizing the principles of We Care, PQA Plus, and TQA, the event aimed to ensure that youth are equipped with the necessary skills for successful careers in the swine industry.
In addition to the top-performing teams, other participating chapters included Pierce City FFA, Marshall FFA, St. James FFA, Northwest Technical School, Clinton FFA, Willow Springs FFA, Eldon FFA, Atlanta FFA, Washington FFA, Salem FFA, Steelville FFA, Knob Noster FFA, and Fayette FFA.
During the contest, teams had the opportunity to visit the University of Missouri’s Swine Research Farm to evaluate an operational swine facility. The students underwent a written exam and then engaged in hands-on activities at various stages within and around the facility to assess procedures.
