By June 2025, all vessels are expected to operate under the new schedule set forth by the Gemini Cooperation network, a joint venture between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk. This initiative marks a significant step towards improving schedule reliability and setting a new quality standard in the maritime industry. Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of the network, emphasizing the benefits it will bring to customers and the overall sustainability efforts of both companies.
With a focus on achieving 90% schedule reliability, Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk are committed to delivering a seamless transition for their customers as approximately 340 vessels are gradually integrated into the shared maritime network. The implementation of this new network will prioritize efficiency, speed, and reduced carbon emissions through the deployment of larger vessels and optimized operating systems.
Maersk highlighted the careful planning and preparation that have gone into the transition to ensure a smooth experience for all customers. The company believes that the innovative design of the Gemini Cooperation network will provide customers with increased reliability, flexibility, and competitive products. Johan Sigsgaard, head of Maersk’s Maritime Products, outlined the timeline for integrating vessels into the network, with full implementation expected by June.
The Gemini Cooperation network will cover east-west routes and include 29 mainline ocean services supported by 28 intra-regional services. This comprehensive network is designed to enhance connectivity, efficiency, and sustainability in maritime transportation. In addition to the Gemini Cooperation network, other logistics alliances such as the Premier Alliance and Eleven Alliance continue to play a significant role in shaping the industry landscape.
The Premier Alliance, consisting of Ocean Network Express, HMM, and Yang Ming Marine Transportation, will continue their close cooperation until 2030, focusing on key east-west trade lanes. Similarly, the Eleven Alliance, comprising COSCO, OOCL, CMA CGM, and Evergreen, has emerged as a dominant force in the market with extensive coverage and market share.
Overall, the maritime industry is witnessing a period of transformation and collaboration as major players come together to enhance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. The launch of the Gemini Cooperation network represents a significant milestone in this journey towards a more interconnected and environmentally conscious future. Customers can expect improved services, greater flexibility, and a higher standard of quality as the industry continues to evolve and adapt to meet the changing demands of global trade.
