In a recent government-issued press release, Ireland’s minister for agriculture, food, and the marine, Charlie McConalogue, commended farmers across the country for their significant contributions to protecting water bodies, enhancing habitats, and reducing agricultural emissions. The efforts of these farmers are part of the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) and are expected to have long-term benefits for the environment and biodiversity.

One of the key focuses of the ACRES program is the protection of water courses. Farmers have committed to various actions to improve water quality, including planting over 2,000 kilometers of hedgerows and approximately 580,000 native trees. These efforts not only benefit the environment but also contribute to the country’s environmental sustainability.

McConalogue highlighted the positive impact that farmers are making on the landscape and emphasized the importance of their work beyond just food production. Through ACRES, farmers are also involved in conservation efforts for breeding waders such as curlews and snipes, maintaining coastal habitats like dunes and salt marshes, and supporting various bird and mammal species through grazing practices and habitat maintenance.

In addition to planting hedgerows and native trees, farmers participating in ACRES are maintaining traditional dry stonewalls, installing owl, bird, and bat boxes, and rejuvenating hedges. They are also actively involved in managing and protecting upland peatlands, controlling invasive species, improving grazing practices, and implementing various agri-environmental actions.

McConalogue expressed his gratitude to the more than 54,000 ACRES participants for their commitment to environmental stewardship in Irish farming. He noted the strong interest among farmers in taking further environmental actions, such as tree planting and hedge establishment through the scheme’s Non-Productive Investments program. Despite challenges associated with the scale and administration of some elements of the scheme, McConalogue assured that efforts are underway to resolve any issues early in the new year.
