Eurobarometer survey shows increasing backing for EU Common Agricultural Policy – Swine news

The most recent Eurobarometer survey has unveiled unprecedented support for the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). According to the survey, public awareness of the CAP has reached its highest level since 2007, with over 70% of respondents acknowledging the policy’s role in ensuring the availability of safe, healthy, and sustainable high-quality food across the EU.

One of the key findings of the survey is the strong value that EU citizens place on farmers and rural areas. A staggering 92% of respondents consider agriculture and rural regions as crucial for the future, with 52% labeling them as “very important.” Moreover, 56% of respondents believe that the current level of financial support provided by the EU to farmers is appropriate for stabilizing their incomes.

The survey also highlighted the importance of key priorities for EU citizens. These priorities include maintaining a stable food supply within the EU (94%), ensuring fair food prices for consumers (92%), promoting sustainable resource management (91%), and empowering farmers within the food supply chain (90%).

Conducted as the eighth edition of its kind on ‘Europeans, Agriculture, and the CAP,’ the survey took place in all 27 EU Member States between June 13 and July 8, 2024. It gathered insights from 26,349 respondents representing diverse social and demographic backgrounds, who were interviewed in their respective native languages.

The overwhelming support for the CAP showcased in the Eurobarometer survey reflects a growing recognition among EU citizens of the policy’s vital role in ensuring food security, sustainability, and the prosperity of rural communities. The findings underscore a positive shift in public opinion towards agricultural policies and the acknowledgment of farmers’ contributions to society.

The European Commission (EC) has welcomed the survey results, emphasizing the importance of aligning EU agricultural policies with the values and priorities of European citizens. The Commission has reiterated its commitment to supporting farmers, promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and ensuring the availability of high-quality food products to consumers across the EU.

Moving forward, the EC aims to build on the momentum generated by the survey and further engage with stakeholders to shape the future of EU agricultural policies. By listening to the voices of EU citizens and incorporating their feedback into policy-making processes, the Commission seeks to create a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural sector that meets the needs and expectations of all Europeans.

In conclusion, the Eurobarometer survey has highlighted the widespread support for the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy among European citizens. The survey results reflect a growing appreciation for the role of farmers and rural communities in ensuring food security, sustainability, and economic prosperity. By leveraging this support and engaging with stakeholders, the European Commission is well-positioned to shape a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector that benefits both farmers and consumers across the EU.
