In a recent development, workers for Chicago-area grocery chain Tony’s Fresh Market have voted against joining United Food and Commercial Workers Local 881, as reported by the National Labor Relations Board. The election saw 1,115 workers oppose unionization while 605 voted in favor of joining the labor group. Organizers had aimed to persuade workers to unionize due to what UFCW Local 881 described as “disturbing management practices” by Tony’s leadership.

Following the election, UFCW 881 released a statement asserting that the workers’ decision not to join the union was influenced by Tony’s “anti-union campaign of fear, lies, and intimidation” that allegedly infringed upon the workers’ rights to a fair election. The union plans to file unfair labor practice charges with the NLRB in response to these allegations. Local 881 President Steven Powell expressed disappointment in the election results but pledged to continue supporting workers in their quest for a fair and safe workplace.
