Driftaway Coffee, a Brooklyn-based specialty coffee company, has recently opened a roastery tasting room to provide guests with an immersive coffee experience. The tasting room, located in the East Williamsburg shop, features a cheerful terrazzo-topped bar and wooden stadium-style bench seats under a bright skylight. Separated by curtains and a pallet rack from Driftaway’s production roaster, the tasting room offers a glimpse into the roasting and production process.
Maintaining an open feel throughout the 3,600-square-foot industrial facility, Driftaway Coffee Co-Founder Suyog Mody emphasizes the importance of transparency and connection between visitors and the roasting space. Plans are in place to offer tours of the roasting process in the future, allowing guests to engage directly with the coffee-making journey.
The centerpiece of the tasting room is the six-seat pourover bar, adorned with pendant lighting and dual brewing stations equipped with Timemore scales and Fellow kettles. Mody expresses a commitment to experimentation and education, intending to use the space to explore different brewing methods and engage with the coffee community. The espresso station, featuring a La Marzocco Linea Mini and Mahlkönig E80 grinder, complements the pourover bar’s design, aiming to provide a visually cohesive and educational experience for guests.
Driftaway Coffee, founded by married partners Suyog Mody and Anu Menon in 2014, prioritizes sourcing from women and minority producers while ensuring exceptional flavor in every coffee offering. As a finalist for the 2025 Roast magazine Roaster of the Year, Driftaway imports coffees from India and collaborates with importers like JNP Coffee and Unblended Coffee to curate a diverse selection.
Having transitioned from home roasting to a shared facility at Pulley Collective, Mody and Menon established their current roastery in 2021. The new public space not only serves as a hub for direct-to-consumer and wholesale operations but also hosts events and workshops to engage with the coffee community. By creating unique tasting experiences and collaborations with producers, Driftaway aims to deepen connections between coffee, people, and the communities that support the industry.
Located at 85 Debevoise Ave. in Brooklyn, Driftaway Coffee invites guests to explore the world of specialty coffee through its roastery tasting room. From email exchanges to face-to-face meetings, the ability to clearly convey information and ideas is crucial for success. However, many professionals struggle with communication skills, leading to misunderstandings, conflicts, and missed opportunities. To thrive in today’s competitive landscape, it is essential to hone your communication abilities and become a more effective communicator.
One of the most important aspects of effective communication is active listening. This means fully engaging with the speaker, focusing on their words and nonverbal cues, and demonstrating that you are truly paying attention. Active listening involves more than just hearing the words being spoken – it also requires understanding the speaker’s emotions, intentions, and underlying message. By listening actively, you can gain valuable insights, build stronger relationships, and avoid miscommunication.
Another key component of effective communication is clarity. Clear communication involves using simple, straightforward language, avoiding jargon or technical terms that may confuse the listener. It also means organizing your thoughts logically and presenting information in a coherent manner. When your message is clear and concise, you are more likely to be understood and taken seriously by your audience.
In addition to active listening and clarity, empathy is another essential aspect of effective communication. Empathy involves putting yourself in the other person’s shoes, understanding their perspective, and acknowledging their feelings. By demonstrating empathy, you can establish trust, build rapport, and foster positive relationships. Empathetic communication is particularly important in resolving conflicts, as it helps to de-escalate tensions and find common ground.
Furthermore, effective communication involves being mindful of your nonverbal cues. Body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice can all convey important messages, sometimes more so than words themselves. By paying attention to your nonverbal communication and ensuring that it aligns with your verbal message, you can enhance the impact of your communication and avoid sending mixed signals.
Another key aspect of effective communication is adaptability. Different situations and audiences may require different communication styles, so it is important to be flexible and adjust your approach accordingly. Whether you are speaking to a client, a colleague, or a supervisor, being able to adapt your communication style to suit their preferences and needs can help you build stronger relationships and achieve better outcomes.
Lastly, feedback is an essential component of effective communication. Seeking feedback from others on your communication style, whether through formal evaluations or informal conversations, can help you identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments. Additionally, providing feedback to others in a constructive and respectful manner can help them enhance their communication skills and contribute to a more collaborative and productive work environment.
In conclusion, effective communication is a critical skill for success in today’s business world. By practicing active listening, clarity, empathy, mindfulness of nonverbal cues, adaptability, and feedback, you can become a more effective communicator and achieve better results in your professional interactions. Investing time and effort in improving your communication skills will not only benefit your career but also enhance your relationships, both in the workplace and beyond.
