Ohio Governor DeWine recently signed a bill on January 2nd, allocating $10 million in drought relief funds to Ohio farmers. This funding will be channeled through the Ohio Department of Agriculture to county soil and water conservation districts, which will then distribute the funds directly to farmers affected by the devastating drought that swept through much of Ohio in 2024.
The aim of this special state funding is to bridge the gaps left by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s disaster relief programs. Farmers who incurred additional expenses such as purchasing extra hay, transporting water, and facing other unforeseen costs due to the historic drought will benefit from this financial assistance. As of January 1st, several counties in southeast Ohio, including Guernsey, Noble, Belmont, Morgan, Muskingum, Monroe, Washington, Jefferson, Harrison, Tuscarawas, and Carroll, were still grappling with drought conditions, as per the U.S. Drought Monitor.
The legislation for drought relief funding faced a time crunch and did not reach the governor’s desk before the end of the legislative session. Consequently, the provisions from the drought relief bill, along with other riders, were bundled into Senate Bill 54, which successfully passed both chambers on December 18th.
While the allocation of funds to farmers is imminent, the exact distribution mechanism is yet to be finalized and communicated. The priority remains on providing timely and efficient financial support to the agricultural community impacted by the severe drought conditions.
