Michigan State University’s (MSU) Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center has once again secured its position as one of the top dairy farms in the nation by receiving the prestigious Platinum Award from the National Dairy Quality Awards (NDQA) for the second consecutive year. The NDQA program, presented by the National Mastitis Council, has been honoring excellence in high-quality milk production for thirty years, and MSU’s dairy operation stood out among 72 competitors from the United States and Canada to claim this coveted recognition.
A distinguishing feature of MSU’s dairy farm is its heavy reliance on student employees who play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations. Despite the challenges posed by a transient workforce due to graduation cycles, the farm has consistently prioritized prevention and effective training, maintaining its reputation for producing high-quality milk. This commitment to excellence has earned MSU a place among the top dairy farms in the nation.
The NDQA winners, including representatives from MSU, will be officially recognized at the National Mastitis Council’s 64th Annual Meeting taking place from January 27–30, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Farm Manager Jim Good will be accepting the award on behalf of the dedicated team at MSU.
The MSU Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center serves not only as a fully operational farm but also as a center for cutting-edge research conducted by faculty from MSU’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and College of Veterinary Medicine. It offers hands-on training for students, equipping them with the skills needed for careers in large animal care and agricultural sciences.
Throughout the years, the farm has played a pivotal role in advancing Michigan’s dairy industry, renowned for producing some of the highest-quality milk in the world. The MSU team continues to lead the way in minimizing mastitis and ensuring the health of their dairy herd, all while operating in older facilities and managing the unique challenges of a student-driven workforce.
The receipt of the Platinum Award further underscores the dedication and expertise of the MSU Dairy Farm team, solidifying its position as a trailblazer in sustainable and efficient dairy production. This prestigious recognition highlights the farm’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and the continual advancement of the dairy industry.
In conclusion, Michigan State University’s Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center’s consistent excellence in milk production and commitment to innovation have rightfully earned it the prestigious Platinum Award from the National Dairy Quality Awards. The farm’s unique reliance on student employees, coupled with its contributions to groundbreaking research and hands-on training, solidify its position as a leader in the dairy industry. The recognition received at the NDQA program serves as a testament to the farm’s unwavering dedication to quality and sustainability, further cementing its legacy of excellence in the field of dairy production.
