As we approach the end of another eventful year, it is a time for reflection on the challenges we have faced and the accomplishments we have achieved. The year 2024 has been a significant one for our association, marked by a series of new beginnings and achievements that have set us on a path of growth and success.
One of the key highlights of the year was the successful PIG elections, which saw the appointment of a new team and board. The process was meticulously organized by Andrea, ensuring that all deadlines were met and the voting proceeded smoothly. The resulting representation of small, medium, and corporate producers, both indoor and outdoor, as well as allied industry members, has provided us with a strong governance group to guide us in the coming years.
A major milestone for us was winning the Food Management Today Trade Association of the Year award, a recognition of our dedication and hard work in the industry. Despite the challenges faced by the sector, such as fluctuating pig prices and animal rights campaigns, we have managed to maintain market stability and resilience.
Throughout the year, we have remained focused on two critical policy areas: farrowing systems and African swine fever (ASF) preparedness. The ongoing political changes, including the snap general election and the loss of key members, have presented challenges, but we have continued to advocate for the interests of the sector.
In particular, our efforts around ASF and border control have been a priority. We have engaged with government agencies and stakeholders to address concerns around ASF entering the UK and have pushed for stronger measures to prevent its spread. Our advocacy for proper implementation of the Border Target Operating Model and stricter rules on illegal pigmeat imports has been ongoing.
On the issue of farrowing systems, we have made significant progress with the release of the Commercial Review of Adaptive Farrowing Systems report. This report, compiled by industry experts, has provided valuable insights and recommendations for the sector. We are now in a strong position to engage with government officials on potential changes and improvements in farrowing practices.
Looking ahead to 2025, we anticipate legislative changes and uncertainties in government policies. Despite these challenges, we are confident in our ability to navigate the evolving landscape and continue to advocate for the interests of our members.
As we close out the year, we extend our warmest wishes to all our members for a happy and prosperous New Year. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the pig industry.
