A survey conducted by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future and Farm Action found that 78% of Americans prioritize food for people over feed for livestock in federal farm funding.

Most federal subsidies go to crops used to feed cattle, poultry, and pigs, which contribute to an unsustainable and unhealthy American diet and food system.

According to the survey, only 4% of federal subsidies go to fruits and vegetables, while 30% go to crops for dairy, eggs, and meat and 12% for biofuels.

The advocacy group sees a national farm system that is losing its ability to produce its own healthy food, with a growing dependence on imported crops, and aims to make as much federal support available for fruits and vegetables as for feed grains.
