SuperMeat, a cultivated meat company, has recently joined forces with Stämm, a leader in biopharma manufacturing, to enhance the cultivated chicken meat production process. This strategic partnership has been facilitated by Varana Capital, a mutual investor in both companies, demonstrating their confidence in the potential of this collaboration.

Stämm, known for its success in stem-cell culture, has expanded its expertise to the food-tech industry with the development of the Bioprocessor. This innovative bioreactor boasts automated, continuous, bubble-free operation and offers a 15 times increase in volumetric productivity for biologics production. SuperMeat was selected as Stämm’s inaugural partner for a pilot at its facility due to its recent achievement of cost parity in cultivated chicken production at $11.79 per pound. This breakthrough was made possible by the company’s ability to rapidly produce high yields of muscle and fat directly from animal cells.

Yuyo Llamazares Vegh, CEO of Stämm, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that a joint team will work to integrate the Bioprocessor into SuperMeat’s production process. The goal of the partnership is to enhance muscle-fiber growth, elongation, and fusion, as well as increase adipocyte formation to create organic, whole-cut meat pieces that closely resemble conventional meat in structure and flavor.

Ido Savir, CEO of SuperMeat, emphasized the importance of combining complementary technologies to drive progress in the cultivated meat industry. By uniting their expertise, the companies aim to develop whole-cut cultivated meat products that offer superior quality and consumer appeal. The collaboration will also focus on developing a process-scaling model and conducting an economic study to assess the potential cost savings from Stämm’s technology, particularly in optimizing culture-media efficiency for biomass production.

Ezra Gardner, co-founder and CIO of Varana Capital, highlighted the significance of Israel’s entrepreneurial spirit and technological prowess in advancing the alternative protein production sector. By introducing Stämm’s biomanufacturing innovation into the ecosystem and combining it with SuperMeat’s innovative approach, the companies hope to revolutionize the industry and deliver sustainable, high-quality cultivated meat products to consumers.

Overall, the partnership between SuperMeat and Stämm represents a significant step forward in the cultivated meat industry. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and expertise, the companies aim to enhance the production process, improve product quality, and drive cost efficiencies. This collaboration not only demonstrates the potential of cultivated meat as a sustainable food source but also showcases the power of strategic partnerships in driving innovation and progress in the food-tech sector.
