A decade ago 35 countries worldwide had reported cases of bird flu. Today, 37 countries in the EU alone have reported cases of bird flu. Over 50 millions birds have been culled in the US and the same amount in the UK & EU this year.
863 people have been infected with bird flu with a mortality rate of 53%. It is believed that the Spanish Flu in 1918, which killed an estimated 50-100 million people worldwide was caused by a form of bird flu.
However, each day, 25,000 people, including more than 10,000 children, die from hunger and related causes. Some 854 million people worldwide are considered “food insecure”.
