Ajit Gunasekara, president of the All Ceylon Poultry Farmers Association, said there could be a shortage of eggs in the future due to reduced chicken imports needed for poultry farming.
He said the farm’s hens are now also sold for meat.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera also said imports of chicken meat needed for poultry production had dropped from 80,000 to 10,000.
The minister said he had no hope for the future of the poultry industry under the current circumstances.
He added that the authorities are therefore looking for short-term solutions to provide the feed needed to sustain the poultry industry and sustain it through domestic sources rather than imports.
