Cuba’s imports of poultry meat from the United States increased by 41.7% in 2021 compared to the previous year. Conceal US-Cuba released the data last week, according to news site 14ymedio. The Caribbean country’s domestic production has declined by 92% since the 1990s.
Cuba is not self-sufficient in poultry production as the regime controls an entire sector devoted primarily to egg production. They currently produce about 9,500 tons of meat, mostly from older laying hens. In the 1990s, Cuba produced about 120,000 tons of poultry (92.1% decrease). In April, it had been a year since the island’s government approved a package of 63 measures to stimulate agriculture.
The United States is the main supplier of chicken meat
The United States is a major supplier of chicken to Cuba, and “the Cuban government has not made public the fact that it often uses blockades to justify economic crises and shortages in the country.
The administration of this sector is overseen by the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture through the Animal Husbandry Group. There are also chicken farms and private cooperatives, but they are not representative due to their small size. Domestic production is also very small and will be consumed locally.
Cuban economist Pedro Monreal posted on Twitter, “Monthly tonnage of chicken exported from the United States to Cuba in February 2022 reached his third highest historical record (31,212 tons) in the last 20 years, and in July 2019 and he reached 3 in 2021. It just crossed the “peak” of the month. “
According to him, between 2001 and 2021, the United States exported a total of 2.78 million tons of chicken meat to Cuba. This amount means that in 20 years +/- 250 kg per person, 12 kg per year and 1 kg per month, equivalent to about 40% of the total tonnage purchased by Cuba over the last five years (2017-2021).
