Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates shared his thoughts on the future of meat alternatives during his annual Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session.

The 67-year-old billionaire answered questions from Redditors on a variety of topics, including climate and veganism, prompting Gates to share his optimism about plant-based meat.

“Even if the share is small today, I think these products will end up being very good,” he added.

Gates said he supports alternative meat brands from Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods and Upside Foods (formerly known as Memphis Meats).

But the billionaire said he isn’t too hopeful about the possibility of the general public turning to vegetarianism to help save the climate.

“It’s great for people who want to be vegan, but I don’t think most people do,” he wrote.

The philanthropist closed out his response to a climate-related question, emphasizing that he believes it all comes down to cost, regardless of which industry you’re talking about.

“The key on climate is making the clean products as cheap as the dirty products in every area of emission – planes, concrete, meat etc,” Gates said. “This is the only way we can ask all the countries in the world to change. If it costs a lot extra we won’t succeed.”
