According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australia exported a total of 593,809 tonnes of canola in December 2024. This figure marks a slight increase in shipments for the first quarter of the crop year, bringing the total to 1.48 million tonnes (Mt), compared to 1.47 Mt during the same period in the previous year.

Despite the overall positive trend, December shipments exhibited a notable decrease of 16 percent from November’s exports, which totaled 709,428 tonnes. The primary markets for Australian canola in December were Belgium, with 185,415 tonnes, Germany, receiving 125,231 tonnes, and France, which imported 115,018 tonnes. Additionally, there was significant demand from South Asia, with Pakistan importing 63,787 tonnes and Bangladesh 28,966 tonnes.

If the seasonal break occurs at the optimal time, it is anticipated that Australia will primarily plant its 2025-26 canola crop in April and May. This planting schedule is crucial for ensuring that the crop reaches its full potential and helps maintain export levels.

Recent reports from Lachstock Consulting indicate that January’s vessel line-up suggests 604,000 tonnes of canola were scheduled for shipment last month, while 491,000 tonnes are booked for February. This information highlights the ongoing demand for Australian canola and the strategic planning involved in its export.

The global oilseed market continues to experience significant volatility, according to Lachstock’s latest GM canola wire. Market participants are increasingly concerned about a tight vegetable oil market through 2025. This situation is largely driven by robust demand linked to rising biofuel mandates in regions such as Indonesia and Europe, alongside production challenges faced by palm oil producers in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Demand from India remains consistently strong, reflecting the country’s growing appetite for vegetable oils. Conversely, while China has recently emerged as a strong buyer of Canadian canola, uncertainties persist regarding the Chinese economy’s ability to sustain growth in vegetable oil consumption. The influence of political factors on demand remains a significant concern, as various scenarios unfold in the global market.
